Apple Inc. has announced that John Ternus will become its next Chief Executive Officer, signaling a major transition at the $4 trillion tech giant. The appointment will take effect on September 1, 2026, with Tim Cook stepping aside after more than a decade in the role to assume the position of executive chairman.
According to the company, the decision received full backing from its board of directors and follows a carefully planned succession strategy developed over several years. Cook is expected to remain in charge through the summer months, working closely with Ternus to ensure a seamless handover of leadership.
A Veteran Engineer Steps Forward
Ternus is not new to Apple’s inner workings. He joined the company in 2001 as part of its product design team and has steadily advanced through the ranks. By 2013, he was appointed vice president of Hardware Engineering, and in 2021, he joined the executive leadership team as senior vice president.
Over his 20+ year career at Apple, Ternus has played a central role in the development of nearly all major hardware products. His contributions span across flagship devices including the iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch, as well as newer categories like the iPad and AirPods.
Driving Innovation Across Product Lines
Much of Ternus’s influence is evident in Apple’s hardware evolution. He has been instrumental in revitalizing the Mac lineup, helping to boost both performance standards and global demand. This resurgence has been highlighted by the introduction of newer devices such as the MacBook Neo, designed to broaden accessibility for users.
He has also overseen engineering efforts behind recent iPhone releases, including the iPhone 17 series, while advancing AirPods technology with features like enhanced noise cancellation and hearing-health capabilities.
Beyond product innovation, Ternus has championed improvements in durability and longevity. His leadership has introduced engineering techniques aimed at extending device lifespan, alongside efforts to enhance repairability.
Focus on Sustainability and Materials
Sustainability has been another key area under Ternus’s direction. He has led initiatives incorporating recycled aluminum into Apple devices and pioneering the use of 3D-printed titanium in newer Apple Watch models. These developments align with the company’s broader environmental goals and commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
Educational Background and Early Career
Before joining Apple, Ternus worked as a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems. He holds a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, providing a strong technical foundation that has shaped his leadership style.
The End of an Era Under Tim Cook
Cook’s transition marks the close of a transformative chapter for Apple. Since becoming CEO in 2011, following Steve Jobs, he has overseen remarkable growth. Under his leadership, Apple’s annual revenue expanded from just over $100 billion to more than $416 billion by 2025.
He also diversified the company’s business model, building its services division into a $100 billion segment while launching new product categories such as the Apple Watch and AirPods.
Cook’s tenure has been defined not only by financial success but also by a strong emphasis on user privacy, environmental responsibility, and global expansion into more than 200 markets.
As executive chairman, Cook is expected to remain actively involved in shaping Apple’s long-term vision, strategy, and policy direction, even as Ternus takes the helm.
