The Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU) in Ikoyi, Nigeria’s largest city, has intensified efforts to combat financial crimes by equipping its detectives with specialized knowledge in cryptocurrency investigations. The training programme is part of a broader strategy to improve the unit’s ability to respond to the growing complexity of cyber-enabled offences.
International Collaboration Drives Initiative
The training was held on Friday at the Sunday Adewusi House in Ikoyi and was organized in collaboration with the United States Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation division. It also received support from the United States Consulate in Nigeria’s largest city, highlighting the importance of cross-border partnerships in addressing modern financial crimes.
According to a statement issued by the unit’s spokesperson, Ovie Ewhubare, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police in charge of the PSFU, Eloho Okpoziakpo, the initiative reflects a commitment to upgrading investigative standards within the unit.
Aligning with National Policing Vision
Okpoziakpo noted that the programme is in line with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, who has consistently emphasized the need for a proactive, intelligence-led, and technology-driven police force. The training is aimed at ensuring that officers are well-prepared to tackle emerging threats in the financial sector.
Focus on Crypto Tracing and Digital Asset Analysis
During the sessions, detectives received practical training in cryptocurrency tracing, digital asset analysis, and investigative strategies specifically designed for cyber-related financial crimes. They were also introduced to how cryptocurrencies function, their applications in financial systems, and the regulatory frameworks guiding their use.
Addressing the Evolving Nature of Financial Crimes
Speaking on the importance of the programme, Okpoziakpo stressed that the rise of digital currencies has introduced new dimensions to criminal activity. He explained that law enforcement must continuously evolve to keep pace with these changes.
“The growing use of cryptocurrencies has made financial crimes more complex. It is essential for our officers to stay ahead of these trends to ensure effective investigation and prosecution,” he said.
Enhancing Investigation and Prosecution Outcomes
He added that the knowledge and skills acquired during the training would significantly improve the unit’s capacity to handle cryptocurrency-related cases. This, he noted, would lead to more efficient investigations and stronger prosecution of offenders involved in digital financial crimes.
Role of the Special Fraud Unit in Cybercrime Enforcement
The Police Special Fraud Unit remains a key arm of law enforcement responsible for handling complex financial crimes, including cyber-related offences. With the increasing use of digital tools in fraudulent activities, the unit’s role has become even more critical.
A Step Toward Future-Ready Policing
This initiative underscores Nigeria’s growing commitment to adapting its law enforcement framework to match global technological advancements. By investing in training and international collaboration, the PSFU is positioning itself to better safeguard the financial system and protect citizens from emerging cyber threats.
